Mary Ann SCHOFIELD

The parentage of Mary Ann SCHOFIELD, formerly THORNLEY, is unclear but records available to date suggest that she was born in 1833 at Sherburn-in-Elmet, Yorkshire and baptised there as Ann RUMBOLD (or RUMBOLT) on 17th May 1835.  Her mother was Dorothy RUMBOLD (nee PULLEYN) the widow of William RUMBOLD .  No father is shown on (Mary) Ann’s parish entry.

On 24th December 1854 at All Saint’s Church, Newton Heath, Manchester, Mary Ann married Joseph THORNLEY, (to be confirmed) though gave her father’s name as John RUMBOLD.  The 1851 census suggests that Mary was in domestic service in Manchester which is presumably how she came to be married there.  By 1856 Joseph and Mary were apparently resident in Pontefract as the 1861 census records two Pontefract-born Thornley children with the now-widowed Mary Ann;  James Edward age 5 and Ann (Hannah) age 2.  The latter child is found on the parish records for Pontefract baptised on 5th February 1859.  Her father’s occupation is ‘Railway Guard’.  In 1881 Hannah married Thomas WHITEHEAD in Leeds.

No certain record of Joseph Thornley’s birth or death has been found to date but his marriage entry to Mary Ann gives his father’s name as James.

Mary married Edward SCHOFIELD on 5th October 1862 and her father’s name was erroneously recorded as ‘John Boling’.  The marriage was witnessed by Edward PULLEYN who presumably was related to her.

Parents of Mary Ann SCHOFIELD:  William and Dorothy RUMBOLD and stepfather John BARRATT

Mary Ann’s parents were William RUMBOLD, born c1802 (probably in Tadcaster) and Dorothy PULLEYN, born 1806 in Sherburn-in-Elmet.  They were married at Tadcaster on 15th October 1832 but in December that year William died age 30.  William’s parentage is not yet known, but  Dorothy was the daughter of James PULLEYN, a Tailor, and Susanna PATRICK.

On 24th September 1837 Dorothy married a widower, John BARRATT, a Gardener.  He was the son of Thomas BARRATT, also a Gardener.  John’s late wife was Elizabeth STEAD who had died in January of that year age 34, leaving John with four children so far known of: Elizabeth 1835, Ann 1833 (which probably accounts for Ann RUMBOLD taking the name ‘Mary Ann’); Sarah born 1830 and Thomas 1827.

John and Dorothy together had five children so far known of: William 1838; Susannah 1843; Joseph 1841; Emily 1848; Edward 1845, all baptised in Pontefract.

Parents of Dorothy PULLEYN: James PULLEYN and Susanna (neé PATRICK)

James PULLEYN was the son of John PULLEYN and Mary, who are named on his marriage entry in the parish register, but his date and place of birth have not yet been established and his mother’s maiden name is not yet known.  The IGI records a baptism for James PULLEYN, son of John, at Cawood (about 6 miles from Sherburn-in-Elmet) in 1764.  A marriage for John PULLAN to Mary PICK at Cawood is also found 17th August 1761.

Susanna PATRICK was the daughter of Thomas PATRICK and Ann RINGROSE and are named on her marriage entry to James.  She was baptised at Monk Fryston on 15th March 1767.  James PULLEYN and Susanna PATRICK were married on 7th February 1788 at Sherburn-in-Elmet.  James and Susanna had seven children so far known of: John 1788; Jonathan 1790; Ann 1792; Joseph 1794; Edward 1797; Hannah 1799; Dorothy 1806.

Parents of Susanna PATRICK: Thomas PATRICK and Ann (neé RINGROSE)

Thomas PATRICK and Ann RINGROSE were married in 1757 at Monk Fryston (the IGI gives the date as 27th February but this precedes the earliest calling of the Banns, which was on 10th April).  The Banns record Thomas being of Pontefract parish and Ann of Monk Fryston parish.

Thomas may have been the son of either George or Joshua PATRICK who both baptised sons at Pontefract in 1833.

Ann was baptised on 4th February 1734 at Monk Fryston and was the daughter of Joseph RINGROSE and Dorothy WALKER who were married on 11th November 1731 at Badsworth, Yorkshire.

Parents of Ann RINGROSE: Joseph RINGROSE and Dorothy (neé WALKER)

Joseph RINGROSE was baptised at Featherstone in January 1707, the son of Richard RINGROSE.

Dorothy, neé WALKER, was born 1710 at Monk Fryston, the daughter of Edward WALKER and Mary BATEMAN.

Joseph and Dorothy were married on 11th November 1731 at Badsworth  and had eight children, all baptised at Monk Fryston.  They were: Ann 1734;  Richard 4th Oct 1736; Joseph 6th Feb 1739; Ellen 6th April 1741; Edward 28th Jun 1742 (he married Ann LEAPAGE on 12th Dec 1763); Christopher 6th Jan 1747; Susan (or Susannah) 4th Oct 1749; Thomas 30th Mar 1752.

Parents of Dorothy WALKER: Edward WALKER and Mary (neé BATEMAN)

Edward was baptised in 1681 at Monk Fryston and was the son of Thomas WALKER and Ann BARKER.

Mary BATEMAN may have been baptised in 1685 at Birkin, (a village equidistant between Knottingley and Monk Fryston), the daughter of William BATEMAN.

The parish registers for Pontefract record the couple’s marriage on 16th November 1703 at Pontefract.  Edward and Mary had possibly seven children: An(n) 1705; Dorothy 1707; Mary 1710; Elizabeth 1712; Ellen 1716; and possibly Mary 1720 and Christopher 1725, all baptised at Monk Fryston.

Parents of Edward WALKER: Thomas WALKER and Ann (neé BARKER)

Thomas WALKER and Ann BARKER were married on 4th May 1680 at Monk Fryston.  Thomas may have been the son of Edward WALKER, baptised at Monk Fryston on 15th April 1656.

Ann’s parentage is not known, but parish records suggest that she and Thomas may have had six children, all baptised in Monk Fryston: Edward 1681; Matthew 1684; Thomas 1687; Barnabas 1691; Elizabeth 1695; Martha 1682.
